This is my first time reading a book by Blake Crouch, and I couldn’t put it down. I really enjoyed Dark Matter and will keep this review spoiler-free. I’d also be interested in reading more from this author.

Overall Thoughts

  • Really enjoyed it

  • Well-written and easy to get into

  • Fast-paced and immersive

  • Constant “ticking clock” tension throughout

Concept & Story

  • Very interesting sci-fi concept

  • Explores alternate dimensions and second chances

  • Focuses on Jason (first-person perspective)

  • Core story: a man trying to get back to his family

  • Mix of high-concept sci-fi with relatable emotional stakes

Themes

  • Family and motivation

  • “What if” scenarios / second chances in life

  • Risk and limited opportunities

Why It Works

  • Relatable human story at the centre

  • Sci-fi elements enhance, not overpower, the narrative

  • High tension due to limited chances and time pressure

Other Thoughts

  • Would make a great movie if done properly

    • Needs a big budget (lots of effects)

    • Smaller cast

    • Strong potential if executed well

Recommendation

  • Highly recommend for sci-fi fans
