This is my first time reading a book by Blake Crouch, and I couldn’t put it down. I really enjoyed Dark Matter and will keep this review spoiler-free. I’d also be interested in reading more from this author.
Overall Thoughts
Really enjoyed it
Well-written and easy to get into
Fast-paced and immersive
Constant “ticking clock” tension throughout
Concept & Story
Very interesting sci-fi concept
Explores alternate dimensions and second chances
Focuses on Jason (first-person perspective)
Core story: a man trying to get back to his family
Mix of high-concept sci-fi with relatable emotional stakes
Themes
Family and motivation
“What if” scenarios / second chances in life
Risk and limited opportunities
Why It Works
Relatable human story at the centre
Sci-fi elements enhance, not overpower, the narrative
High tension due to limited chances and time pressure
Other Thoughts
Would make a great movie if done properly
Needs a big budget (lots of effects)
Smaller cast
Strong potential if executed well
Recommendation
Highly recommend for sci-fi fans
